Trevor Loran retained his title of Champion of Gerrards Cross Squash Club by beating Stewart Hefferman 3 - 2 in a terrific final on Sunday 24th March.
A decent crowd were enthralled by this lengthy match which involved four games of delicious cat and mouse squash throughout which Stewart was able to keep himself in contention at all times. The final game saw a step-up in intensity and the pair still went point for point before Trevor sealed the match and the title with a 10 - 8 win. The match lasted well over an hour and the final score was 9 - 5, 6 - 9, 9 - 6, 7 - 9, 10 - 8.
This was 1st team captain, Stewart’s eleventh consecutive appearance in the Championship final which includes seven victories. Tournament organiser, Nick Hallchurch declared it the best Championship final seen at the club in 20 years and few there could have doubted it.
Simon Free won the Rob Milliner Summer Handicap Tournament on Sunday 6 October after beating Chris Hockin in the final with a score of 100 – 97. Both finalists are regular league 2 players and the starting score was 75 – 80. Chris, a seasoned campaigner at finals night struggled to get going as Simon overcame the handicap fairly quickly. He rallied to make things difficult for Simon in the later stages but Simon held on for a well deserved victory.
Stephen Hanover beat Michael Jacobs in a repeat of the 2011 final to win the Ken Hewison Winter Handicap Tournament at Gerrards Cross Squash Club on Sunday 10 March. A small crowd was treated to an excellent final between the two League 1 players as Stephen, starting from 80 to Michael’s 60 reached the magic 100 with just three points to spare. The game ebbed and flowed and the result was always in doubt from start to finish.
This was Stephen’s third time of winning having also been runner-up once whilst this was Michael’s second time as runner-up having also won the trophy once.
The Plate competition of the Ken Hewison Winter Handicap Tournament was won by Joe Lyon who beat Rakesh Gulati in an entertaining final. The starting handicap was 75 – 50 and Joe (currently playing in League 7) won the match to 95 points although the final result was never certain.
Joe has previously been runner-up once in the Winter Plate tournament and twice in the Summer Plate competition. Rakesh, a League 1 regular currently playing in League 2 has previously won both the Summer and Winter Handicap titles and been runner-up in the Summer tournament twice.
Sunday 24th March was a busy night for 1st team captain Stewart Hefferman as he collected his third consecutive Veterans' Championship trophy on his way to the final of the headline competition. Stewart beat Rory Fisher by 3 - 0 in another excellent final that saw Rory push Stewart all the way despite the final scoreline. The line - up was a repeat of the final of the 2011 tournament which saw both contestants enter the competition for the first time.
The final score was 9 - 5, 9 - 6, 9 - 3.
